The M40A5, in real steel terms, is a sniper rifle used by the US Military for the Marine Corps. It is based on the Remington 700, which is still the most popular hunting rifle to this day. Not bad considering it was first produced in 1962! Of course the Military aren't usually happy with "off the shelf" so changes are required. They're fitted with external box magazines, have upgraded barrels, and are bedded into McMillan A5 tactical stocks. Currently all M40 models utilise Remington's shorter action, keeping in line with the rounds used.
The armourers in Quantico tend to the trigger, as well as fitting them into their new stocks. A lot of care and attention goes into this stage, as it is critical to the gun's accuracy - ensuring the barrel reacts the same way every time it is shot.
In airsoft terms we rely on the armourers at Tokyo Marui to produce something spectacular, and that they have! Considering these are the people who brought you the renowned VSR-10, and the best L96 on the market, is it really of any surprise? Well, they've done even more this time, taking on board the lessons learned from both models!
When you pick up the M40 A5 it feels exactly as you'd expect the real steel to - weighty, dense, and comfortable. Despite the increased weight, it is extremely comfortable to hold (even one handed), and keep on target! Shooting it is a dream - the action is shorter than the VSR, and with a 1 joule spring it's pure smooth sailing. The trigger allows you to feel the release, and if you're not an instant fan it can be adjusted (for pull and release). The safety has also seen an update to ensure you don't damage it while operating the bolt, e.g. what can happen on VSR-10's when the bolt is slammed forward with the handle down!
Best of all you can make this piece your own, thanks to the adjustable trigger, but also with the spacers included in the box - make the stock's size suit your arm length! Of course, the addition of a Harris style bipod, and magnified scope, are essential in completing the look, but thanks to the extra rail space toward the front you can add even more accessories!
